“If anyone wished to be first, he shall.

be the last of all and the servant of all.”

 Proverbs 21:13

Opening Hymn: “Morning Hymn”

Lord this morn we raise our voices

As the world in song rejoices

All the works of Thy creation

                           Join to sing Thy admiration

Lord to us Thou has been gracious,

O the blessings Thou didst give us

Now we can not help but praise Thee

For the gifts of love and mercy.

Through the night Thou did protect us

From the dangers that beset us

That we might arise to praise Thee

And to sing Thy lasting glory.

Closing Hymn:  “Turn Your Eyes to Jesus”

Turn your eyes to Jesus, look to heav’n above

Seek his many graces and his wond’rous love.

//How the pow’rs of nature, kneel before his throne

And in hymns of splendor, worship him alone//.

Sing my soul in gladness, sing in rapt’ rous joy

With the heav’nly forces, songs of praise employ.

//For his many graces, ever thankful be,

For the Lord most precious now would come to thee//.

Theme:  Can I be God’s voice?

Sometimes God does not seem to hear the cries of the poor.  Violence, atrocities, and disasters occur daily in our world, and God does not intervene.  When we cannot hear God, we need to hear the voice of the prophet over the strife and discord.  We need a message that is written boldly for all to see: “God will not disappoint us.  If there is a delay, wait for it, it will surely come, it will not be late.”  Despite the fact that God may not act according to our time-tables, God is faithful and will fulfill what has been promised.

To live in this way means living like Paul, by faith, not by certitude.  Persecuted, maltreated, or imprisoned, Paul regarded himself only as a servant who carried out his master’s orders.  He modeled Jesus’ command to his disciples to do what ought to be done; even it meant bearing the hardships that the gospel entailed.

Like the disciples we cry, “Increase our faith!”  Paul encouraged us to “stir into a flame” the gift of faith God has already given us.  Jesus says that if our faith is as small as a mustard seed, we still have the potential to do the impossible.  To move mountains, we must believe we can move mountains.  Too often, we just do not believe that we are the instruments of God and God has given us special tools to accomplish His mission.  When we do come to this belief, we will see His mission come to the fullest in our parish and in our community. It does not happen overnight, but like the mustard seed, it has to be nurtured to grow.  That requires learning the truths through religious education.

        TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY

                 ORDINARY TIME

            Habakkuk 1:2-3, 2:2-4

            Psalm 95;

            2 Timothy 1:6-8, 13-14

             Luke 17:5-10

KEY VERSE: "If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you" (v 6).

READING: Luke recorded various sayings, or "logia," which were unique to his gospel, in order to sum up the teachings of Jesus on discipleship. As the demands of following Jesus grew heavier, the Apostles pleaded for an increase of faith. Jesus told them that if they had faith as small as a mustard seed they would accomplish great works. This saying meant that even those things that looked completely impossible would become possible if approached with faith. Jesus' disciples must follow his example, and labor without expecting special treatment or payment. The field-hand had duties in the master's kitchen and at the master's table. These tasks were lowly ones, and might be performed without anyone appreciating them; yet they are images of loving service. When Jesus' disciples had done their best they could not expect to be rewarded for something that was only their duty to do.

REFLECTING: Am I a servant of the gospel, or do I expect others to serve me?

PRAYING: Lord Jesus, help me to "labor without reward save that of knowing I do your will" (St. Ignatius Loyola).

Our God has called us by name and given us a task to fulfill.

Are we doing what is expected to do as Disciples of Christ?

If not, now is the time to begin our task.
