Opening Hymn- “Just As I Am Without One Plea”

PNCC Hymnal 229

Just as I am without one plea, but that Thy blood was shed for me.

And that Thou bidd’st me, come to Thee, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am though tossed about, with many a conflict, many a doubt

Fighting’s and fears within, without, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am Thou wilt receive, wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve,

Because Thy promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am Thy love unknown, has broken every barrier down;

Now to be Thine, yea Thine alone, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Teach me your paths.

Closing Hymn-“Turn Your Eyes to Jesus”

PNCC Hymnal 221

Turn your eyes to Jesus, look to heav’n above

Seek his many graces and his wond’rous love.

How the pow’rs of nature, kneel before his throne

And in hymns of splendor, worship Him alone.

Sing my soul in gladness, sing in rapt’ rous joy

With the heav’nly forces, songs of praise employ.

//For His many graces, ever thankful be,

For the Lord most precious now would come to thee//.

Week of Christian Unity Continues

We are halfway through the International Week of Christian Unity, and I pray that we all have been praying the special prayer of unity printed below. Christian Denominations throughout the world are praying Jesus’ prayer that we all be one in faith, hope and love. Jesus prayed this before beginning His passion.  In the nearly two millennia since the New Testament was written, a number of divisions have arisen among Christians. Quite apart from theological disputes, instances of schism and denominationalism have frequently drawn strength from differences in ethnicity, race, nationality, geography. Do the ethnic rivalries reflected in Ephesians and other first-century texts offer a word to us regarding later cases of disharmony among Christians? In Ephesians 2:11-22 we are presented with an image of Christ as one who “breaks down” the dividing wall of hostility that separates peoples and nations (2:14), yet he is also revealed as the cornerstone of a new construction, a home to shelter and nurture all the community within “a dwelling place for God” (2:19-22). To understand what is expected, I ask all to reread the Letter to the Ephesians this week as part of participating in this year’s week of Christian Unity and pray daily the following prayer.  This is what our God desires.

Eternal Father, we praise you for sending your Son to be one of us and to save us. Look upon your people with mercy,
for we are divided in so many ways, and give us the Spirit of Jesus to make us one in love. We ask this gift, loving Father, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Yu will be catching peopleThird Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: Jonah 3:1-5, 10
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 25
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 7:29-31

Gospel: Mark 1:14-20

KEY VERSE: "The world in its present form is passing away".

1 Corinthians 7:31

READING: The readings today tell us that God’s mercy is for all.  The mercy is shown to the people of Nineveh whereby Jonah is sent there to preach penance for sin.  A universal fast is imposed by the king to appease the Lord. As we appease the Lord, Paul reminds us of the shortness of time in this world, so that we can repent and conduct ourselves worthily in the eyes of God and be detached from the popular secular thinking present today.  This is why Jesus preached the Good News of salvation and we should become like Simon, Andrew, John and James to follow Him and continue Jesus’ ministry by becoming “fishers of men”.

REFLECTING: The poet Theodore Roethke says in his poem The Waking, "I learn by going where I have to go." We ask God to show us the way and guide the steps we must take. We lean heavily on God's compassion. We ask the Lord who is good news to remember Jonah, to remember Nineveh, to remember us as we respond to God day by day. What we should reflect upon are these three points:

1. Consider a choice you must make in the near future. Set it against the sure knowledge that you are God's chosen and beloved one who has been given a grace and a task.

2. What have you witnessed lately that reminds you that your notion of God is too small?

3. How does God's mercy relate to the kind of justice we might mete out?

PRAYING: Teach me Your ways O Lord will always be my constant and daily prayer to you God, my Lord and Savior.
