“Grandchildren are the crown of old men

and the glory of children in their

                                 parentage.”

                                                  Proverbs 17:6

Opening Hymn: “Come Unto Jesus”

Refrain:  Lo, the vision wondrous to behold

He would save us from this sinful world

               To heaven’s blessed glory untold

               O dearest Lord we come!

Come unto Jesus, Come while you may

Hear how He calls you, come now this day

How He does love you, follow His way,

Gently He calls you come! (refrain)

Come O my child now, come heed His call

Give Him your heart, your love and your all

He shall uplift you, lest you should fall

Gently He calls you come! (refrain)

Closing Hymn:  “Ode to Joy”

Joyful, joyful, we adore You, God of glory, Lord of love.

Hearts unfold like flowers before You, opening to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, drive the dark of doubt away.

Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day.

Mortals join the mighty chorus, which the morning stars began,

God’s own  love is reigning o’er us; joining people hand to hand.

Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife,

Joyful music leads us sunward, in the triumph song of life.

Theme:  Family of God

Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Christian Family.  This PNCC solemnity has a two fold purpose. First it addresses the nuclear family that we were born into and grow together.  Secondly, this solemnity addresses the Church family pointing out that we are all a family of God, redeemed through the blood of Jesus and made brothers and sisters by Him.

The Christian family is under attack in today’s world.  We see television programs and movies mocking those who hold Christian faith and values dear to their hearts.  The media tends to portray the Christian family is not normal in today’s society.  You know why this is done?  The answer is to compensate for their shortcomings and less than godly values. In other words, guilt from immoral behavior translating it into a civil liberty.  They portray a hedonistic life as being normal and they bring a guilt trip to the public who oppose the secular ways as bigots in the name of diversity.  Their main objective is to subtly break down the Christian family and many times we do not recognize that this is being done to us.

Look how sporting events and practices are conveniently scheduled on Sundays, to subtly take us away from keeping the third commandment being fulfilled. Unfortunately. we place our responsibility for others to do our work as disciples and conform to these practices.  Are we not to transform this world, not conform to it as the apostle Paul so brilliantly taught?  Let us take our responsibility seriously.

We cannot allow faith from disappearing in our country and world for we are baptized and confirmed Christians. The values that we must hold are those that God has given to us through the Sacred Scriptures and Holy Traditions founded in truth and love taught by the Church.  We cannot be blinded by those who will destroy God’s values in this world.  Remember that God’s way is not the human way and we must put God back into the mainstream of our society and not be ashamed.  When God is present in our lives, His grace will be found in our families and our families will be strong, not dysfunctional. If we truly love our families, then we must place God first in our family lives in all we say and do.  “So then while we have the opportunity, let us do good to all. But especially to those who belong to the family of the faith.”  Galatians 6:10

TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY

       ORDINARY TIME

             2 Kings 5:14-17

             Psalm 98

             2 Timothy 2:8-13

             Luke 17: 11-19

KEY VERSE: "Has none but this foreigner

returned to give thanks to God?" (v 18).

READING: As Jesus journeyed to Jerusalem, he crossed the border of Samaria where he met ten lepers, one of them a Samaritan. Leprosy in Biblical times was not only Hansen’s disease, which attacked the skin and nerves causing deformities and wasting of body parts, but was a general term for various skin diseases that caused cultic impurity. According to the Law of Moses, anyone infected with leprosy was rendered unclean and excluded from the community (Lv 13:45-46). To reenter society, the individual had to be examined by a priest who would determine if the person had been healed. When the lepers cried to Jesus for pity, he gave them a simple command to show themselves to the priest, which implied that they were already restored to health (Lv 14:1-4). Although all ten were healed, only the Samaritan returned to worship at the feet of Jesus and give thanks. While the others were healed of their physical affliction, this man was also saved by faith in Jesus despite the difference in religious belief.

REFLECTING: Lord Jesus, help me to see others the way you do.

PRAYING: Do I serve all people, regardless of their race, creed or color?
