CLOSING HYMN “Ode to Joy” Bulletin
“Your throne O God stands forever and ever; a tempered rod is Your royal scepter. Psalm 45:7
Opening Hymn: “Come Thou Almighty King”
Come now almighty King, Help us your name to sing
Help us to praise, Father all glorious, ever victorious
Come and reign over us, ancient of days.
Come now Incarnate Son, Your life in us begun
Our prayer attend, come and your people bless
And give your Word success, strengthen your righteousness,
Savior and friend.
Come Holy Comforter, Your sacred witness bear
In this glad hour, Your grace to us impart, Now rule in every heart,
Never from us depart, Spirit of Pow’r!
To the great One in Three, Eternal praises be,
Forever more, Your sovereign majesty
May we in glory see, and to eternity, love and adore.

Closing Hymn: “Ode to Joy”
Joyful, joyful, we adore You, God of glory, Lord of love.
Hearts unfold like flowers before You, opening to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, drive the dark of doubt away.
Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day.
Mortals join the mighty chorus, which the morning stars began,
God’s own love is reigning o’er us; joining people hand to hand.
Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife,
Joyful music leads us sunward, in the triumph song of life.
Theme: “Do I show my love and gratitude?”
This weekend is the last Eucharistic celebration of the liturgical year. We will conclude Cycle C with the proclamation of Christ the King. Jesus said He was the good Shepherd who cares for the sheep but the people were not interested in a shepherd to lead them, they demanded a king to rule them. The prophet warned of the rights of the king, but the people said, “Not so!” They demanded a king just like all other nations.
As head of the church, Jesus rules over the thrones and principalities. Unlike human rulers, Jesus reigns by submission and acceptance of God’s will. On the cross, a sign hung over Jesus’ head: “this is the King of the Jews.” But the people mocked Him saying, “You saved others, why not save yourself?” One of the men crucified with Jesus joined in the blasphemy, “if you are the Messiah of God, save yourself and us.” They did not understand the Jesus came to save others, not Himself. The other man fervently pleaded, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” Both men were at equal distance from Jesus’ outstretched arms, but only one of them accepted His mercy: “this day you will be with me in paradise.”
Paul was full of gratitude for being made worthy to share in God’s reign with the saints. We too must rejoice as we go into the house of the Lord to worship. Christ the King wants us to taste the triumphant hymns o everlasting life in His kingdom. He wants us to shout with glee the Alleluias! For we are not a religion of the dead but of the living and our prayers should be on enthusiasm and hope.

provides a free meal each day to the poor and homeless.

SOLEMNITY
CHRIST THE KING
2 Samuel 5:1-3
Psalm 122
Colossians 1:12-20
Luke 23:35-43
KEY VERSE: "Amen, I say to you,
today you will be with me in
Paradise" (v 43).
READING: After Jesus was arrested, Pontius Pilate questioned him, asking, "Are you the King of the Jews?" [John 18:33]. Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not from this world" (v 36). Then Pilate handed him over to be crucified on a hill outside of the city of Jerusalem named "Calvary" or the "Skull Place" ("Golgotha" in Aramaic). Over Jesus' head was an inscription: "This is the King of the Jews" (Latin: INRI - Iesus Nazorean Rex Iudaeorum). Jesus prayed to his Father to forgive those who acted out of ignorance. The crowds watched passively while the leaders and soldiers mocked him, asking, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, the chosen one" (v 35). Jesus was crucified between two criminals (only Luke reports their words). One of the men reviled Jesus. The second criminal confessed his own guilt and asked to be remembered when Jesus came into his kingdom. Jesus assured the condemned man that he would receive salvation that very day. What seemed to be a defeat in the eyes of the world was a victory in God's sight.
REFLECTING: What does Christ's kingship mean in today's world?
PRAYING: Jesus, remember me when I come into your kingdom.
