All on earth thy scepter claim, all in heav’n above adore thee

Theme:  Always Ask God

When we struggle with conflicts on our lives, we may grow weary of pleading with God to help.  But it is quite the opposite because that is when we need God’s help.  The psalmist tells us that God is our guardian in all our struggles and our “shade” in the heat of battle.” Many times we tend to forget that God is always beside us night and day. Watching over our coming and going now and forever.

Paul told the early Christian Church to be faithful to what they learned and to believe.  Paul reminded them that the sacred old testament scriptures were the source of God’s wisdom which would inspire them when they found themselves weak, or correct them when they strayed and train them to be fully competent in every good work.  Whether convenient or inconvenient, they had the responsibility to share God’s word and most importantly, never give up.

Today we hear a great parable from Jesus.  Jesus told this story on the necessity of never losing heart.  In the parable of the widow who suffered injustice from her opponent, the judge was hardhearted, unconcerned with her rights or God’s justice.   The woman persisted in her demands, yet he refused to listen.  Eventually, the judge was worn down by the woman’s plea and settled the case in her favor.  Jesus asks us, if this corrupt judge answered the cries of one who called out day and night, will not God hear and answer us?   My dear friends, always be persistent with your prayers.  The answer and aid will come.  Believe!

           TWENTY-NINTH

                  SUNDAY

          ORDINARY TIME

              Exodus 17:8-13

              Psalm 121

              2 Timothy 3:14- 4:2

              Luke 18:1-8

  KEY VERSE: "Will not God

then secure the rights of his

chosen ones who call out to

him day and night?" (v 7).

READING: Jesus knew that his disciples might lose heart after he ascended to his Father, and he encouraged them to persist in prayer. He told them a parable about a widow who pleaded with a judge for her rights. In contrast to the powerful figure of the judge, the widow represented the poor and defenseless. The Law of Moses was meant to protect helpless members of society such as widows, and orphans. (Deut 10:18; 14:29; 16:11). This judge might have been a paid magistrate appointed either by Herod or by the Romans, for he disregarded both God's law and human needs. Without support of a husband and lacking resources of any kind, she had no hope of expecting justice. Nevertheless, the woman persisted in her demands, and the judge finally relented. Jesus did not compare God to an unjust judge. He said, if such a person could be persuaded into giving a widow justice, how much more would God answer those who cried for mercy (Ex 22:20-22). Christians must work for God's justice in the world of today.

REFLECTING: Who are the people in my community whose rights are not heard?

PRAYING: Lord God, help me to be just in all my dealings.
