Opening Hymn: “Sweet Hour of Prayer”
I
Sweet hour of prayer, sweet hour of prayer, that calls me from a world of care
And bids me at my Father’s Throne, Make all my wants and wishes known.
In seasons of distress and grief, My soul has often found relief,
And oft escaped the tempter’s snare, By thy return sweet hour of prayer.
II
Sweet hour of prayer, sweet hour of prayer, Thy wings shall my petitions bear,
To Him whose truths and faithfulness Engage the waiting soul to bless,
And since He bids me seek His face, Believe His word and trust His grace,
I’ll cast on Him my every care and wait for thee sweet hour of prayer.
Closing Hymn: “Onward Christian Soldiers”
Refrain: Onward Christian soldiers marching as to war
With the cross of Jesus going on before.
Onward Christian soldiers marching as to war
With the cross of Jesus going on before
Christ the royal Master, leads against the foe
Forward into battle, see His banners go: Refrain
Like a mighty army, moves the
Brothers we are treading where the saints have trod
We are not divided, all one body we
One in hope and doctrine, one in charity: Refrain
Theme: How my faith affect my life?
What is to be gained when laborers toil in the heat, with worry and anxiety tugging at their hearts and minds? What profit is there for landowners who work with knowledge and skill, when they die their property is left to others who have done nothing to deserve it?
For answers to such questions, we must lift our eyes above this world and its trials. We have been raised with Christ in baptism, therefore, we must put to death our worldly thoughts and put on the life of Christ. Material goods are illusory and do not guarantee the happiness we seek. Jesus illustrates this in a story of a rich man who had a good harvest but did not have enough bins to store all the grain. If he built larger ones, he could relax and enjoy life for years to come. But before he could finish the job, his life was taken. Who would inherit his wealth? Who would benefit from his labors? We too must ask ourselves hard questions. Are we rich in the eyes of the world or in the sight of God?
Jesus says, “make yourselves rich in the sight of God.” He means get things straight; see where true values lie: in consideration for others, in family relationships, in unselfishness, and in generosity. Out first reading today used a poetic language to say something very direct: “You can’t take it with you.” This is why it is important that we focus on the true value of life. What is that? His Church and His Mission which He gave to us to complete. His demand for our time, talent and money to work to bring others to the realization that life is not here on earth but is in heaven.
