Opening Hymn: “Morning Hymn”

Lord this morn we raise our voices

As the world in song rejoices

All the works of Thy creation

                           Join to sing Thy admiration

Lord to us Thou has been gracious,

O the blessings Thou didst give us

Now we can not help but praise Thee

For the gifts of love and mercy.

Through the night Thou did protect us

From the dangers that beset us

That we might arise to praise Thee

And to sing Thy lasting glory.

Closing Hymn: “Turn Your Eyes to Jesus”

Turn your eyes to Jesus, look to heav’n above

Seek his many graces and his wond’rous love.

//How the pow’rs of nature, kneel before his throne

And in hymns of splendor, worship him alone//.

Sing my soul in gladness, sing in rapt’ rous joy

With the heav’nly forces, songs of praise employ.

//For his many graces, ever thankful be,

For the Lord most precious now would come to thee//.

Theme: Pray the Lord’s Prayer for others.

Most of us know how to strike a good bargain at a car dealership or at a flea market.  But is it possible to use such tactics with God?  Can God’s mind be changed like ours?  Abraham was a man of faith, but he was also a realist.  He was not blind to sinful humankind.  Though Abraham prayed for justice, he also prayed for compassion.  Would the innocent be swept away with the guilty?  Abraham struck a bargain with God.  If there were 50 righteous people in the city, would God spare it for their sake?  How about 45? 30? 20?  Would God spare the city for just 10?  God was a willing negotiator.  For the sake of some, God spared all.

Because Jesus knew God intimately, He taught us to pray with confidence to God as our “Father.”  God is merciful and just, and God pardons our sins.  The debt we owe is a null and void contract, nailed to the cross and cancelled in the waters of salvation.  Though we were dead in sin, we are raised to new life.  Jesus offers the bread of life to nourish us each day.  The door of God’s heart is opened wide to those who share God’s loving-kindness with others.

As we begin to pray our Mass today, let us consider the number of times we have come to Church for reason other than prayer.   Let us seek His forgiveness and ask the Lord to teach us how to pray with confidence, knowing we will receive, because God our Father loves us.

    Seventeenth Sunday

       Ordinary Time

     Genesis 18:20-32

     Psalm 138

     Colossians 2:12-14

     Luke 11:1-13

   KEY VERSE: "Lord

   teach us to pray just

   as John taught his

   disciples" (v 1).

READING: Throughout Luke’s gospel, Jesus is shown praying at every important moment of his life. It was in observing Jesus at prayer that moved his disciples to ask him to teach them how to pray, and he gave them the "Lord’s Prayer" (Lk 11:1-4). In Matthew’s gospel, the Lord’s Prayer begins with “our father" (Matt 6:9). We experience God’s fatherhood not as isolated individuals but as members of the Church. By contrast, Luke’s gospel simply says, “Father” (Lk 11:2) expressing his unique relationship with God who Jesus called “Abba, Father.” Spend time meditating on each line of the Lord's Prayer in Luke's gospel, making it your own: "Father" ... Do I live like a son or daughter of God? ... "Hallowed be your name"... Do I respect the Lord's name? ... "Your Kingdom come"... Do I work to bring about the reign of God? ... "Give us each day our daily bread" ... Do I trust God to provide for my daily needs? ... "Forgive us our sins" ... Do I believe that God can absolve me of my sins? ..."As we forgive everyone who trespasses against us" ... Am I willing to forgive and forget the sins of others? ... "Deliver us from evil" ... What is the greatest evil that I need to resist? Pray that you will not fail God in times of trial.

REFLECTING: Do I teach others how to pray?

PRAYING: Lord Jesus, teach me how to pray.
