“Do not work for food that perishes, but for the food that

endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give

you.  For on Him the Father, God has set His seal.”

                                                                  John 6:27

Opening Hymn: “Who Can Measure Heaven and Earth”

Who can measure heav’n and earth God was present at their birth

Who can number seeds or sand?  Every grain is in his hands

Through creation’s countless days, Ev’ry dawn sings out his praise

Who can tell what wisdom brings First of all created things

One alone is truly wise, Hidden from our earthbound eyes

Knowledge lies in him alone-God the Lord upon his throne.

Wisdom in his plan he laid, Planted her in all he made

Granted her to humankind, Sowed her truth in ev’ry mind

But with richest wisdom bless, Those who love him first and best

Wisdom gives the surest wealth, Bring her children life and health

Teaches us to fear the Lord, Marks a universe restored

Heav’n earth she will outlast-Happy those who hold her fast!

Closing Hymn: “In Thy Protection”

In thy protection, Father in heaven, Lo we thy children place our life, our all.

Lord wilt Thou bless us, save us from temptation, keep us from danger, lest in sin we fall.

Though all be peaceful, though storms beset us, in Thy protection, we shall find our rest.

Father we pray Thee, humbly we beseech thee, deliver us the children Thou has blessed.

Theme: How do I greet strangers?

Abraham, the great “father of faith,” did not ignore the strangers who camp into his encampment.  He ran to greet them, offering them water and food to refresh them on their journey.  Abraham and Sarah were servants of the God, willing to wait on those in need.  Their generosity did not go unnoticed and they were rewarded for a desired child would be born to them, even while they were very old.

Although Jesus was often ignored and rejected, He found a home among friends-Martha and Mary of Bethany.  But Martha was too busy with all the needs of hospitality to offer Him the attention he desired.  Her sister, Mary, knew what their guest wanted most-someone with a listening heart.  We may complain that we are worn out from caring for others’ needs and have no time to spend with the Lord.  Or we can be faith-filled servants who sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to His words.

Like Abraham and Martha, we need to serve the guests who come to our homes.  Like Sarah and Mary, we must allow God to fill us with new life so that we can bring the good news to others.  When we do this, we will discover the mystery of Christ within us.

It is important in our missionary endeavors, to greet people with a Christ-like approach.  As we reminded that “they will know that you are my disciples by our love.”   God has given each of us our appointed tasks and to fulfill these tasks, He will help us to fulfill our responsibilities.  May we listen to His teaching.

         SIXTEENTH SUNDAY

             ORDINARY TIME

               Genesis 18:1-10a

               Psalm 15

               Colossians 1:24-28

               Luke 10:38-42

  KEY VERSE: "Mary has chosen

the better part and it will not

be taken from her" (v 42).

READING: As Jesus journeyed toward Jerusalem, he stopped at Bethany to rest at the home of his friends Martha and her sister Mary (In John's gospel, their brother Lazarus was raised from the dead by Jesus, Jn 11:1-44). Jesus had been teaching his followers about the privilege of being a disciple (Lk 10:23-24), and now he did something radical for his day ̶ he taught a woman. When Mary sat at the feet of Jesus, listening to the words of her master, she assumed the position of a disciple. Martha criticized Mary for neglecting to help her with hospitality for their guest. Jesus reminded Martha that she was too anxious about things of little importance. The one thing that should concern her was "to seek God's kingdom before all else" (12:29-31). Mary had chosen the better portion, and Jesus would not deny her the opportunity. The quality of our service improves when we spend time with the Lord.

REFLECTING: Do I spend time with the Lord so that I can serve others with love?

PRAYING: Lord Jesus, help me to welcome you into my home so that I might listen to your words.

A Reminder:  Please place the Worship Service Booklets properly back in the pew racks.  This prevents the booklets from damage.

Thank you for your help and concern.
